Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary

Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary

This Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is one of the premier migratory bird landing spot in Malaysia.

Matang Mangrove Forest is the largest stand of mangrove ecosystems in Peninsular Malaysia. These ecologically abundant mangrove habitats stretch along the west coast tidal mudflats of northern Perak for almost 50km plus another 40km along the shorelines of the sheltered river systems within the reserve's five estuaries.

The Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is located in the northern part of the ecosystem. During the migration season between August and April every year, more than 200,000 migratory birds representing some 50 species stop over here.

There is also well-equipped and informative visitor centre where you can get detailed education programs and see a display of photos, which focus on the importance of safeguarding and preserving the mangrove ecosystems and the large numbers of residents and migrant bird species. Visitors can hire a boat for the purpose of fishing or bird-watching in Kuala Gula. A boat trip (5-10 people can fit in a boat at one time) costs about RM200.00 per day.

How to Reach there: From Kuala Lumpur, get onto the North South Expressway, heading North. Once you reach Perak state, take the Taiping Utara exit and head towards Simpang Empat. From Taiping, you can get to Kuala Gula via Simpang Empat or Selinsing. From the North, take the Parit Buntar exit through Kuala Kurau.
