Sri Maha Mariamman Temple
Hailed as the most famous
Amman temple in Malaysia, Sri Maha Mariamman temple was founded in 1873
by the then leader of the South Indian Traders Union, Mr. Kayaroganam Pillay. Using his
influence, he built a small attap hut and placed in it the image of Amman.
But since during the
time, the Kuala Lumpur town was undergoing a great deal of growth, the temple had to make way for
a train station that was being planned. Therefore, in 1885,Mr. Kayaroganam Pillai met up with the
then Chinese Community leader Yap Ah Lai and secured a piece of land in Kaptan Kudil where the
new Mariamman shrine was built.
