Penang State Mosque

The Penang State Mosque is located in the Greenlane suburbs towards the western end of Georgetown, near the intersection of Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Masjid Negeri / Jalan Scotland. Strategically on a 4.5ha area, the state mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in the country. Completed in 1980, it stands proudly featuring an elegant exterior of modern architecture.
The mosque's prayer hall is luxuriously decorated with a magnificent chandelier and can accommodate up to 5,000 people at any one time. Like other mosques, the Penang State Mosque sees its busiest day on Friday when it becomes packed with worshippers who come for obligatory Friday congregational prayers.
Other interesting mosques in and around Georgetown area that are oen to visitors include the Acheen Street Mosque and the Kapitan Keling Mosque.
The Malay Muslim makes up 32 percent of the 1.2 million population in Penang. However, there are also many Muslim people who hailed form various different ethnic background due to Penang's history as one of the Straits Settlements in the 1800's. One particularly notable is the Indian Muslim society whose forefathers arrived from India and settled in Penang.
The Penang State Mosque is a fully operational mosque and is not normally subject to visitations from tourists. As such, visitors would do well to acquire permission to enter the premises for reasons other than to perform prayers. Permission to enter can be obtained from the State Religious Department in Lebuh Pantai. Visitors must dress appropriately and remove their shoes before entering the mosque.
